1. I saw an officer bust an intersection with his lights and siren only to turn them off when they got down the road. What were they doing?

Sometimes an officer responding to an emergency call is cancelled and this is why they may appear to be using their lights to get through an intersection.

2. Can a police officer drive a marked Idaho Falls police car in plain clothes?

Yes. The Idaho Falls Police Department has the Cars for the Community program that allows officers to take their cars home at the end of their shift. Officers pay a monthly fee and are allowed to drive the Police vehicle off duty.

There are requirements and limits placed on the officer while he is driving the vehicle off duty. Family members can be in the vehicle as passengers only.

3. I would like to ride along with a police officer. How do I sign up?

The Idaho Falls Police department does not currently have a program that allows civilian riders on a day to day basis. We do allow ride along for current law enforcement employees from other departments, students enrolled in the Law Enforcement Program at Idaho State University and civilians that are part of our Citizens Academy.

4. Can a police officer stop me if he is driving an unmarked car?

Yes. Unmarked police vehicles are equipped with red and blue lights. Most unmarked Idaho Falls Police vehicles display some type of flashing light in the front and rear of the vehicle.

If you feel uncomfortable pulling over, acknowledge to the vehicle that you are aware that they are trying to pull you over by waving and slow down. Drive to a well lit area where people are present.

If you have a cell phone dial 208-529-1200 and this will connect you with Idaho Falls Police dispatch. Explain to the dispatcher that you are uncomfortable with the situation and the dispatcher will assist you.

5. Can a police officer disobey the speed limit?

Yes and no. If he is performing his duties, he may disregard traffic laws as long as he proceeds with due caution. Officers cannot disregard traffic laws unless they have a reason.

6. Can a police officer have a passenger in his police vehicle who is not another officer or prisoner?

Yes. Authorized passengers are permitted. The Idaho Falls Police has specific rules for who may or may not be a passenger in an Idaho Falls police vehicle.
