1. I had a positive encounter with an Idaho Falls Police Officer. How can I compliment him or her for a job well done?

You can send a written letter or email to the Police Department.

2. How do I make a complaint on a Police Officer?

If you feel that an Idaho Falls police Officer has not treated you fairly or you would like to complain about his or her actions, call the shift Lieutenants’ office at 208-612-8610. You will be able to speak with a supervisor who can explain the complaint process to you.

We do not take 3rd party complaints. The person making the complaint must be someone directly involved in the Officer’s actions or the parent of a juvenile involved. If you are not satisfied that the complaint was handled properly, Chief Roos would like to hear from you directly. He can be contacted at 208-612-8660.

3. Why do they ask so many questions when I call the police?

Police call takers are trained to get as much information as possible to better assist in handling the call. While the police call taker is trying to obtain the necessary information, in most instances, they have already made sure police are on their way. The information you provide will further assist towards your safety and that of the police officers.

4. I'm intimidated by officers, would they mind me saying "hello" to them or shaking their hand?

Please feel free to approach any officer and strike up a conversation if they are not currently handling a call. They are after all serving you, and we encourage not only the officers but the public as a whole to meet and get to know our officers, we firmly believe that the success of any Department is dependent on community support.

5. If I get arrested, does the officer have to read me my Miranda Rights (Warning)?

No, Miranda only applies if the officer takes you in to custody and you are interrogated (asked specific questions about the crime). A Police Officer can ask general questions such as your name, address, where are you going etc. In some cases, an Officer may not ever read you the Miranda Warning (arresting you on a warrant).

6. If I am questioned by a Police Officer after being stopped on the street, do I have to answer his questions?

You should always give your name, address and phone number and any information about your identity, but you are not required to answer anything else. Often, a few polite answers may end the matter. When Officers stop you, they are usually investigating suspicious activity or a complaint and will get you on your way quickly.
