1. Can I make a police report over the phone or does a police officer have to come to my house?

The Idaho Falls Police department does not take reports over the phone. We do accept reports online if they meet certain criteria.

2. Should I report suspicious activity in my neighborhood?

Absolutely. One of the things that set a free society apart from authoritarian governments is the heavy reliance on a partnership between the citizens and their police. We don’t have near the numbers of police officers per capita as police-state countries because we’re not protecting the government from the citizens. We’re protecting the citizens from the criminals. The police can do the heavy lifting, but it’s the people who live here that are the eyes and ears of the police department. Policing in a free society only works if the citizens do their part.

3. Can I have an officer check on a license plate for me?

No. State and Federal regulations prohibit Police Officers from using the computer to retrieve information not related to investigative purposes, and the information can only be shared with law enforcement entities.

4. How can I report narcotics and Gang activity in my neighborhood?

If Narcotic and gang activities are reported, all information will remain confidential. If the activity is occurring now and you would like an Officer to respond or if you are only reporting suspicious activity, contact the Police Department by phone or email.

5. Can I report a crime anonymously and possibly receive a cash reward?

Yes. You can call Idaho Falls Crime Stoppers at 208-522-1983 and report a crime or give information about a crime and remain anonymous. If your information helps solve a case, the Crime Stoppers board will authorize a cash reward.

6. What should I do if I see a person driving recklessly or aggressively?

Make note where you are traveling, the direction of travel, color, make and license number of the vehicle. If you have a cell phone dial 208-529-1200 and this will connect you with police dispatch. Give the dispatcher your name, phone number and the above information. Follow the directions of the dispatcher and they will relay all the information to Officers in the area. Do not attempt to keep up with a reckless driver - it will only put your safety in jeopardy.

7. What should I do if I witness or come upon a crash?

Pull safely off the roadway, see if anyone is injured. Dial 911 if injuries have occurred. Make sure that you give the dispatcher your exact location, your name and phone number, how many persons were injured and the severity of injury. If you have a cell phone, call police dispatch.

8. How do I evict someone from my house and can the Idaho Falls Police assist?

Eviction of someone from a home is a civil process. The Idaho Falls Police department does not get involved in civil matters unless directly ordered by a Magistrate and/or Judge. The Idaho Falls Police will respond if criminal laws are being violated during the eviction. Information about how to evict someone can be found on the Idaho Self Help website.

9. What can I do about barking dogs in my neighborhood? How can I report animals running loose in my neighborhood?

Dispatchers will send Animal Control Services to resolve the problem. After hours, a Police Officer may respond. To report incidents involving animals, contact police dispatch.

10. How loud does someone have to be before it is Disturbing the Peace and what are the hours that Disturbing the Peace applies to?

There is no set time for Disturbing the Peace. Idaho Statutes states: “Every person who maliciously and willfully disturbs the peace or quiet of any neighborhood, family or person, by loud or unusual noise, or by tumultuous or offensive conduct, or by threatening, traducing, quarreling, challenging to fight or fighting, or fires any gun or pistol, or uses any vulgar, profane or indecent language within the presence or hearing of children, in a loud and boisterous manner, is guilty of a misdemeanor”.
