[ARCHIVED] Idaho Falls Power Offers New Plant Tour Schedule

IFP Turbine

Idaho Falls, ID – The City of Idaho Falls has operated a municipal electric generation system since 1900, when a small generator was installed in an irrigation canal to create electricity for street lights. Today, the city continues its hydro heritage with the operation of four hydro-power plants along the Snake River.

Idaho Falls Power is proud of its facilities and happy to show them to the public and explain how they operate. Guided tours of the City Plant located in downtown Idaho Falls are available Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for walk-ins. Other tour times or group tours are available by appointment.

The tour gives visitors an overview of the utility’s history, a glimpse of the city’s hydropower system and a first-hand look at the City Plant’s generator and operating system.

“People are often amazed in what they learn about our utility,” IFP Customer Relations Supervisor Joelyn Hansen said. “Plus, they love to see the operation of our unique bulb turbine nestled in our downtown center. People – both locals and visitors – always walk away from the tour with a new perspective and appreciation of electricity.”

Plant tours start at the IFP Administration Building, located at 140 S. Capital Ave.

If anyone has questions or to schedule a tour, contact IFP at 208-612-8430.
