[ARCHIVED] Man stabbed at Garfield Apartments and transported to hospital

On Tuesday at 10:20 AM, Idaho Falls Public Safety received a report that a man had been stabbed on the 500 block of North Fanning Avenue. Idaho Falls Police and the Idaho Falls Fire Department immediately responded to the scene, where they found one adult Caucasian male, age 54. The man was transported via ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center

Because no suspects were on the scene when police arrived, at 10:42 a.m., a Code Red alert was sent to residents in the area in a one-mile radius of the scene of the incident. The alert warned residents in the area to take safety precautions by remaining inside their homes and locking their doors. Dora Erickson Elementary and Compass Academy were also notified. Administrators of the two schools made the decision to institute a “shelter in place” status at each school, which consists of the schools locking outside doors, closing and locking classroom doors, keeping students inside, but otherwise continuing the school day as usual.

There were two witnesses to the incident who reported to police that a verbal altercation occurred between three men, which then turned physical. Witnesses told police that one of the men, described as a young Hispanic male in his early twenties, stabbed the victim with a knife and then both men fled from the scene on foot.

By 11:10 a.m., police located and detained both suspects. The incident is under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time. At 11:13, the Code Red alert was canceled and the two schools lifted the “shelter in place” status.

One of the men, 18-year-old Devon Grant Arias of Idaho Falls, was arrested Tuesday evening on the charge of aggravated battery.

It has not yet been determined whether charges will be filed against the second male suspect.
