[ARCHIVED] Fifty-Nine Local Students Receive Mayor’s Scholarship Funds

Idaho Falls, ID: Fifty-nine scholarships totaling more than $65,000 will be awarded to students from area schools at the 13th Annual Mayor’s Scholarship Fund ceremony on Wednesday, March 28, at the Colonial Theater in Idaho Falls.

“We have several new awards to be offered this year and are excited to have the College of Eastern Idaho and Idaho State University College of Arts & Letters offer some of our applicants scholarships to those schools,” explains Executive Director Leslie Pincock.

Mayor’s Scholarship Fund LogoA reception limited to award recipients, parents, sponsors and school administrators will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by a public award ceremony at 7:00 p.m. The award ceremony is free and open to the public.

The Mayor’s Scholarship Fund supports awards for students who agree to continue a college-bound path. Thirty graduating seniors received the Senior Scholarship of $1,500. Six seniors were offered a scholarship through the Mayor’s Scholarship Fund by CEI, while two seniors were offered a scholarship by ISU College of Arts & Letters.

Twenty students, grades 8-11, received the Mayor’s Promise Award of $250. Four seniors who are past Promise Award recipients received the $2,500 Legacy Senior Award. The Mayor Jared Fuhriman Community Service Award of $2,500 was awarded to one student.

All scholarships are intended for use at accredited institutions of higher education in Idaho. The Mayor’s Promise Award can also be applied to dual credit courses taken through Idaho high schools. Dual credit courses allow students to obtain college credits while working toward their high school diploma.

Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper states, “Our community is wise to invest in these promising young people. They represent the best of our future. We are very fortunate to have generous sponsors and terrific volunteers to make this scholarship program possible. I could not be more excited to see the number of awards grow to reach even more deserving students this year.”

In 2006, then Idaho Falls Mayor Jared Fuhriman, in partnership with the District 91 and District 93 Education Foundations, established the Mayor’s Scholarship Fund. Since its inception, the Mayor’s Scholarship Fund has provided 389 scholarships totaling more than $395,000 to area students. The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to students who plan to pursue their post-high school education. An endowment fund was also established to ensure the program’s future as it encourages students to stay on the path to higher education.
